Methodology

Last reviewed: October 8, 2026

This page describes how we research and maintain both the directory and our roofing guides, so you can judge how much weight to give them. Our goal is to be useful and honest, not to overstate what we know. Where a guide relies on outside expertise, we name the source at the bottom of the article and link to it.

Directory Listings

Every listing in Shoals Roofing Directory is built the same way:

  1. Public Google Business Profile data. We start from publicly available Google Business Profile information for roofing, gutter, and exterior contractors in Lauderdale and Colbert counties. This gives us names, phone numbers, addresses, websites, hours, categories, and public ratings and review counts.
  2. Deduplication. Many companies appear multiple times — different names, old addresses, separate profiles for roofing and gutters. We merge entries that clearly belong to the same business so each company appears once.
  3. County filter. A listing is included only if the business is based in, or clearly states that it serves, Lauderdale or Colbert County. Out-of-area storm chasers with no local presence are excluded.
  4. Photo and rating capture. Photos and Google ratings and review counts are captured as they appear publicly, with the capture date recorded. We do not edit, select, or reinterpret photos, and we never fabricate ratings or reviews.
  5. Structural listing checks. We check that the phone number connects, the address is consistent with public records, and the website loads. The date of the last check is shown on the listing.
  6. Selective enrichment. For a subset of listings we manually add detail from the company's own website — services named on the site, manufacturer certifications, founding years, and stated service areas. Thin or unverifiable records stay thin; we would rather show less than guess. This work is done by the Shoals Roofing Directory Editorial Team.
  7. Neutral ordering. Listings are ordered featured first (clearly labeled paid placements), then alphabetically. Payment never changes the alphabetical order.

What our checks do not cover: work quality, licensing, insurance, warranty terms, or customer experience. See the editorial policyfor exactly what “listing checked” means.

Roofing Guides

Our guides are written for Shoals homeowners dealing with real local conditions — Tennessee Valley heat and humidity, spring storm and hail season, and the fall severe-weather window. Our rules for guides:

  • No fabricated statistics. If we cite a number, it comes from a named, linked source.
  • No fake reviews or invented customer stories.
  • Regional specifics only where they are real — for example, that hail and wind storms are a fact of life in north Alabama and that out-of-town contractors follow them.
  • Where a guide relies on outside expertise, we name and link the source at the bottom of the article.
  • Guides recommend processes and questions to ask — not specific companies — unless clearly labeled.

What We Don't Do

  • We don't sell homeowner information to contractors.
  • We don't accept payment to add, remove, or reorder a listing.
  • We don't publish reviews we can't trace to a public source.
  • We don't claim to inspect, license, or endorse any company.
